I would respectfully submit that the advantages of the Superintendent of the Hongkong Department might now be placed on a fairer level with the posts enumerated above, and while not wishing to detract in the least from the important & valuable results achieved by other botanical establishments, I think it will be conceded that the importance of the Hongkong department, and my own efforts compare favourably with the importance of other similar establishments and the work of their Directors.
In confirmation of which I think I may refer the Right Honorable the Secretary of State to Sir Joseph Hooker, the late eminent Director of Kew & his able successor Sir Thiselton Dyer, who know a good deal of the position of the Hongkong Department & what I have had the honour of accomplishing since I joined the Government service, while at the same time they are easy reference from Downing Street.
11. It is obvious that Hongkong being the most distant of Crown Colonies, heavier expenses fall on me in particulars than to those living nearer home.
